Merit order

Category: Markets

The sequence in which power plants are dispatched, ordered from lowest to highest marginal cost of generation, until supply meets demand. Plants at the top of the merit order run all the time (baseload); plants at the bottom run only at peak prices. Renewables with near-zero marginal cost have pushed fossil plants higher in the merit order.
